Drug Endangered Children

They are called drug endangered children. These are kids exposed to the chemicals used and the drugs manufactured in meth labs.

A typical case reported from Knox County went like down last week. State Police raided a home finding meth, marijuana and paraphernalia. They also found anhydrous ammonia, one of the chemicals used to make meth. The homeowner, Brent Braizer gets hauled off to jail. But what about the 9 year old son and the 12 year old daughter at the location?

The protocol for how to handle children at the scene of a meth lab is available online. It outlines the procedures used and includes removing the children, photographing them and getting a medical assessment. Along with this, the children are interviewed and before being transferred to a shelter. They submit a urine sample for testing, and the cops are supposed to ask questions about their care.

Persons trained in “child friendly” forensic interview techniques try to find out the following:

  • * Last meal and last bath the child had.
  • * Does anyone in the home smoke (and if so, what do they smoke).
  • * Is there anything in the house that bothers the child.
  • * Are there other children who weren’t in the home at the time.

It’s all very sad and all very necessary. In this case, the mother lived at another location and the children were released into her custody. This isn’t always the case.

In some ways, we tend to overlook the kids when the drug bust goes down. They are the innocent victims of their parent’s bad choices. If mom and dad are sent off to jail, it’s either up to relatives to take over or they go into the child welfare system and the state takes charge.
